129. Girl In The Other Room, Diana Krall

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Neil Larson (Hammond B-3 organ); Anthony Wilson (guitar); Christian McBride, John Clayton (bass); Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Terri Lynne Carrington (drums).

Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California and Avatar Studios, New York, New York.

U.K. version with exclusive bonus track "I'll Never Be the Same."

It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest departure to date; THE GIRL IN THE OTHER ROOM is almost entirely devoid of the jazz standards that constituted her previous repertoire, and it contains her first recorded batch of original songs. It's possible that new husband Elvis Costello, who co-wrote all six of those tunes with his wife, was the agent provocateur. It's also feasible that Costello, who has previously recorded Mose Allison material and palled around with Tom Waits, nudged Krall toward such choice selections as Allison's bluesy plaint "Stop This World" and Waits's cocktail rhumba "Temptation." Nevertheless, Krall delivers them--like the rest of the songs here--in a misty, laconic style very consistent with her earlier work.

There's no attempt at pop-oriented production here, just the same piano-trio sound that's been Krall's stock in trade all along. Ironically, the jazziest tune here is Costello's early-1980s ballad "Almost Blue," previously performed by Chet Baker. Naturally, the new songs also bear the unmistakable stamp of Costello, but no matter how far afield her song sources (Joni Mitchell and Chris Smither's catalogs are drawn on as well), Krall maintains the trademark feel that made her famous.

126. Chet, Chet Baker

Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Joe Lovano, David Sanchez (tenor saxophone); Federico Britos Ruiz (violin); Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano); Pat Metheny (acoustic guitar); Ignacio Berroa (drums, percussion).

Producers: Charlie Haden, Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

Recorded at Criteria and The Hit Factory, Miami, Florida from August 27-31, 2000. Includes liner notes by Leonardo Acosta, Charlie Haden & Gonzalo Rubalcaba.

NOCTURNE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Charlie Haden has a longstanding interest in Cuban and Central American music (most notably expressed on his LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA albums). Here, in the company of Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, he explores the lush, romantic aspects of the Cuban sound. A bracing and delicious sort of melancholy runs through these quiet pieces, calling the listener in ever closer. Half the set features Cuban ballads, the rest being a mix of originals (two by Haden, one by Rubalcaba) and four pieces of Mexican origin.

The perfectly matched Haden and Rubalcaba are joined on NOCTURNE by drummer Ignacio Berroa. Guest appearances by tenor saxophonists Joe Lovano and David Sanchez, guitarist Pat Metheny, and violinist Federico Britas Ruiz add additional shadings that underscore the strong melodic sensibilities of this music. NOCTURNE combines the gentle, late-night moods of Haden's Quartet West with the Spanish derivations that have informed the bassist's vision over the course of his exhilarating career.

123. Know What I Mean, Cannonball Adderley & Bill Evans

Know what I mean chắc chắn là 1 album ko thể bỏ wa đ/v Audiophiles ./.

120, 121. Ella and Louis - AGAIN !

Track 25 begins the acoustic section with three people talking about their location in the sound stage. Track 26 is all three people talking at once. Tracks 27 to 32 are specially processed stereo-mono fed into various channels for the purpose of shifting images across the stage. Track 30 is a center image. Track 31 mono shifted to the right channel. Track 32 back to stereo. Track 33 contains a 45-second sample of music recorded at a normal transfer level. Track 34 is the same sample but down 10 dB. Tracks 47 to 56 contain bandwidth limited pink noise that has been filtered into successive 1/3rd-octave bands. Track 57 contains a warble sound from 20 Hz to 20 kHz for subjectively evaluating relative smoothness. Track 58 is a warble from 100 Hz to 20 Hz. Track 59 contains individual frequencies from 10 Hz to 99 Hz with each frequency for exactly 5 seconds. Tracks 60 to 62 contain very flat, low distortion 20 to 20 kHz sweeps. Track 63 is 440 Hz note "A" and Track 64 is a 100 Hz tone burst. Track 65 is a burst set at 1 kHz and Track 66 is centered at 10 kHz. Track 67 is 100 Hz square waves. Track 68 is square waves at 1 kHz. Tracks 69 through 82 are very detailed and revealing distortion tracks so that the user can evaluate how much distortion is present. Track 84 is a demonstration of group delay and tracks 85 and 86 were recorded at the Indy 500 with special ITE (In the Ear) microphones for demonstrating the auditory phenomena known as externationalization. If you've never experienced sound from headphones appearing to originate from points behind, on top, and to the side of you, check out these two tracks. ”

A truly audiophile recording and readily digestible music too.

Short review (quoted):
“ Swiss guitarist Max Lasser is an alumnus of Andreas Vollenweider's band, and his music displays the same fluidity. He combines catchy melodies with powerful rhythms and rich arrangements, playing acoustic, electric and slide guitars plus mandolin, dobro and Chinese cheng. Lasser draws on folk, rock, jazz and world backgrounds while his band adds keyboards, bass, drums, woodwinds, marimba and vibes. Included is the aptly titled "Little China," awith delicate cheng and second guitarist Thomas Fessler, two tracks with Paul McCandless, five cuts with vibes/marimba ace Emmanuel Séjourné, and the closer, "Ry's Blues," a tribute to the great slide guitarist Ry Cooder. ”

The combination of Simpson's folk-blues-inflected guitar with the exoticism of Man's pipa creates a most unusual sonic world, a place where East meets West and the blues reign supreme. This disc, along with several other terrific ventures by producer Kavichandran Alexander (such as the pairing of Ry Cooder with mohan vina player Vishwa Mohan Bhatt) approaches the common language of a truly global music. Amazing stuff.

MOBILE FIDELITY SOUND LAB | AUDIOPHILE CD

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL, or "MoFi") is a company that produces audiophile releases of classic CDs and vinyl records.

Many commercial CDs undergo dynamic range compression in order to sound "louder" when played on radio or low-end systems. Some consider this detrimental to the sound quality when reproduced on high-quality equipment. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab releases are highly desirable due to their attention to detail concerning the audio mastering process. Some of the techniques used are half-speed mastering and pressing gold-plated CDs. MFSL also releases record albums meant to be played at 45 RPM instead of the standard 33⅓ RPM, for better sound quality. These albums must be released on two or three discs, as less music can be held at increased speed.

MFSL only acquires the license to reproduce releases for a specific time period, and because of the limited quantities produced, they are highly sought after.

Product Details:

By 1980, Rush was experiencing the mid-point of what would be their golden period of recording (1976-1982). Released in January that year, Permanent Waves was a transitional exercise that moved them further from the 'prog-rock' lump-labeling and pointed the way for their next masterpiece the following year, Moving Pictures.

Peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard's Album chart, Permanent Waves spawned such perennial concert staples as “Freewill” and “Spirit of Radio”. Well-beyond the power-trio of old, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart each contributed equally, with multiple instrumentation and arranging approaches. With Terry Brown, (on board from their 1974 debut through 1982's Signals) again producing, each album was a leap forward in mixing and production values, helping elevate the group to the upper echelons of rockdom. The combination of songwriting, arranging and production indeed renders it "an undisputed rock classic".

30th ANNIVERSARY SAMPLER
Reference Recordings declares, “It’s party time!”
1976 seems a long time ago, but that's when RR was born. Remember direct-to-disc LPs? That's how we started, but being inexperienced and naïve, our first recording project fell short of expectations, and was never released. The label got started for real in 1978 when we connected with Keith Johnson and his home-brew focused-gap tape machine, which provided extraordinary material for Prof. Johnson's Astounding Sound Show. That's the short version; you'll find more information on our About RR webpage. In recent years, RR beta-tested and introduced the High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD®) process, co-invented by Keith Johnson— in our view, the best way to make a digital compact disc.

As Exhibit A, we present RR's 30th Anniversary Sampler, a singular bargain. For only $9.98, we offer a generous helping of primo tracks from recent RR releases, featuring the Minnesota Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, organ legend Virgil Fox and organ prodigy Felix Hell, great American pianist Gary Graffman, and our latest piano whiz, Joel Fan. All this marvelous music, including several world premieres (and one first release not available elsewhere), is delivered in "Prof." Johnson's most dazzling HDCD® sound for your listening pleasure or for system evaluation. Included in the booklet is a catalogue of current RR releases.

97. Harem, Sarah Brightman

Sarah Brightman- Harem (Studio) (CD-Album- 2003)
Genre: Vocal | Album | FLAC 450MB + Sample
May 2003 | Publisher: Angel | Language: English - Italian - French- Arabian | RapidShare

“ If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley ”

***********************************
Heady and intoxicating, Harem is, without doubt, the most expansive and cinematic of Sarah’s albums yet. The same artistry that, in previous albums, was used to interlace pop with opera, is evident here yet again.

This time, Sarah and producer Frank Peterson deftly intermingle their contemporary and, at times, dance-oriented sensibilities with the exotic instrumentation and melodic phrases of bygone eras. Nowhere is this fusion more pronounced than in the mesmerizing title track, “Harem.”

Although this album is a departure from her recent classical crossover albums, one song features Sarah’s operatic voice. On “It’s A Beautiful Day,” Puccini’s “Un Bel di” is artfully coalesced with driving synthesizer beats and Middle Eastern refrains.

Sarah's voice is complemented by Nigel Kennedy's touching violin passages and Kadim Al Sahir's strapping vocals on the melancholy and mournful "The War is Over."

In "What You Never Know" and "Free," Sarah delivers intimate renditions, exposing the raw vulnerability that her fans find so endearing and seductive.

Sarah takes on an active writing role in this album and is credited with writing or co-writing the lyrics and/or music to “Harem”, “It’s A Beautiful Day,” “Free,” “The War Is Over Now” and “You Take My Breath Away.” Lyrics that speak of myth and fantasy weave through the album.

On “Voyage” in “Arabian Nights,” she writes:

Wilderness to wilderness
I traveled from afar
On the soft wind of the Nadq
Came the fragrance of Araar

On “Until the End of Time” Sarah's lyrics read:

Around the world in eighty days, we sailed the seven seas
A thousand nights and one, and forty more in fantasy
The prophecy in destiny was falling
Calling… falling… and calling out to me

Lyrically and musically, Harem casts a spell from the very first notes and holds the listener captive till the very end.

May 23, 2000 | Original Release Date: 1990 | Proprius | ASIN: B00019OV32
APE+CUE+LOG+PAR2+COVERS | RAR | 369.23 MB

Taken entirely from the second of a legendary two-day engagement at Stockholm's Pawnshop club, this third of four CDs that fully document the gig puts the focus on vibraphonist Lars Erstrand who even gets top billing. Arne Domnerus on alto and clarinet co-stars and the rhythm section (pianist Bengt Hallberg, bassist Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen) is also excellent. With the exception of a Charlie Parker blues ("Now's the Time"), the quintet sticks to swing and Dixieland standards and there are many swinging moments on such tunes as "In a Mellow Tone," "Take the 'A' Train" and "Struttin' with Some Barbeque." All of the volumes in this enjoyable series are worth picking up by straightahead jazz fans.

The second of four volumes that fully document a 1976 engagement at the Pawnshop Jazz Club in Stockholm, Sweden, this set differs from the others in that vibraphonist Lars Erstrand is not present. Arne Domnerus (on alto and clarinet) heads a quartet also featuring pianist Bengt Hallberg, bassist Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johnasen. Other than an African folk song (a second version of "High Life,") and a Swedish folk song, the repertoire is dominated by swing standards; highlights include a lengthy "In a Mellow Tone," "Poor Butterfly" and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be."

"One of Okoshi’s trademarks, apart from his razor sharp attack and bold ideas on the horn, is his knack for putting a thoroughly fresh spin on traditional material with inventive arrangements." – Downbeat Magazine

"...a formidable and tireless presence on the jazz fusion scene." - Jazz Times

"When I’m playing, I want to paint the air with my colorful tone. Choices between long and short strokes, quickly or slowly, high in the canvas or low, brighter color or darker, with a fat brush or a pen. Paint the air one note at a time." — Toru "Tiger" Okoshi

Many years of experience including studio and road gigs with the likes of Buddy Rich, Gary Burton, Dave Grusin, Tony Bennett, and David Sanborn, has given Tiger an edge. "I’ve always felt like a tightrope walker with my playing style," Tiger states and with his critically acclaimed album, Echoes Of A Note, being rated #5 on the jazz chart of UPI Critic’s Poll, he’s certainly walking the right tightrope.

Throughout his lifetime, John Bowers, the founder of B&W Loudspeakers, strove relentlessly to get as close as possible to a transparent reproduction of recorded sound.

Born in 1923, near Worthing on the south coast of England, John spent the war years as a special operations executive in clandestine radio contact with allied resistance operatives in occupied Europe. He specialised in electronics and radio-transmission and after the war he opened a retail hi-fi store in Worthing with his business partner Roy Wilkins.

One of John’s passions was classical music. An avid concertgoer, he was disappointed by the sound reproduction that the best equipment of the day offered and set about improving the quality by modifying existing loudspeakers. Eventually, he started building his own designs in the workshop at the back of his hi-fi store.

In his relentless pursuit of perfection, John quickly built a reputation for himself, and his client base started to grow as more and more people seeking better sound reproduction came to his workshop to buy his custom-designed speakers. One of his greatest fans early on in his career was an elderly lady, a Miss Knight, who was so impressed with his knowledge of classical music and so pleased with the speakers he made for her that she left him £10,000 in her will for him to develop the business and pursue his research. So, in 1966, John Bowers and his lifelong friend Peter Hayward founded a separate manufacturing company, then called B&W Electronics, transferring to part of the present site at Meadow Road, Worthing in 1972. They agreed from the outset to live modestly and plough any profits back into the business to further research into the quest for the perfect loudspeaker.

At this time, much of the interaction between loudspeakers and their surroundings was not well understood. The basic motor principle and electric circuits were common knowledge, but what happens to a cone under dynamic conditions was unknown because the movements were too small and rapid to visualise. These were the days before lasers, with their ability to detect minute vibrations. John hired extremely talented engineers and invested in the development of diagnostic tools and measurement equipment and in 1976 he opened a dedicated R&D department with a team of specialist acoustic and electronic engineers who had a wealth of modelling, testing and design tools at their disposal.

Throughout his career John enjoyed a close relationship with recording engineers who provided vital feedback on how loudspeakers could be improved. As a result of this relationship, B&W’s famous 801 was launched in 1979 and soon became the reference speaker in nearly all of the world’s classical recording studios, including EMI Abbey Road, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon.

The phenomenal success of this product pushed B&W to the fore of all loudspeaker manufacturers. In typical fashion, John Bowers used this success to fund even more research and development, and in 1982 he created a dedicated research and development facility for his team of engineers in the picturesque village of Steyning in West Sussex. Dubbed the “University of Sound”, the Steyning Research Establishment now houses some 20 graduate engineers and support staff with expertise in a wide range of disciplines.

John realised that, to have a truly successful company, it is not sufficient simply to have outstanding products. They have to be backed up by efficient sales and marketing support. Never content to rely on the home market, he always looked to develop a strong export base and quickly developed overseas markets and further the presence of B&W products worldwide.

John Bowers passed away in 1987 but the culture he created was so firmly embedded in his company that his mission remains undiluted. Now under the chairmanship of Joe Atkins, supported by a strong team of dedicated people from many different parts of the world, reflecting its global outlook, B&W has enjoyed substantial growth in recent years. But the passion for music, so deeply engrained by Bowers and remembered by many still at B&W that worked for him in the early days, remains a core value of the company he founded.

Of the many amazing products that have come from the Steyning Research Establishment, probably the most famous is the Nautilus. Launched in 1993, after 5 years development and to widespread acclaim, the Nautilus has been described as “possibly the best loudspeaker money can buy”. The technology used for this model has subsequently been used in the whole B&W product portfolio. More recently, B&W has received widespread acclaim for Diamond Tweeter domes, the result of another extended research project, which are generally acknowledged to offer the finest reproduction of high frequencies yet accomplished.

The quest continues.

The albums Reviews

This is one of the finest recordings we've heard in a long long time! Highly Recommended!!!" - Bob Bantz / President Elusive Disc, Inc.

For over twenty years the sound quality of B&W loudspeakers has been an audiophile reference. This CD includes a selection of recent titles for you to listen to and hear for yourself the outstanding brilliance of the loudspeakers (and of course the music) and you will be astonished!

This Direct Metal Master CD is a great test and reference record for the listener interested in music and superb sound quality! If you are an audiophile, this is the CD for you!

Regarding "Turned My Upside Down" by Sara K.: Night living does a lot to you that day living doesn't. Not all bad either, you know. But, one thing it does is show you the other side of love on a pretty regular basis. People live out a lot of their dramas in a bar. Elusive illusions. Set-ups. Rejections. Romance. Wild combination of neon and perfume in that cool night air.

Paul Stephenson (If You Want My Love) weaves themes of dark memories, magical moments and mystical pictures into poetic tapestry that fascinates and ensnares the listener.

Steve Strauss ("Flesh and Blood" and "Mr. Bones") is a singer-songwriter of unusual depth and sensitivity. He combines tender melancholy and naive desire with cynicism and sort of morbid subversity - a reflection of his experiences with street kids as a social worker in New York. His unique vocal delivery simultaneously fascinates and polarizes - neutrality is not an option.

This CD version of "Very Audiophile New Recordings" is a Direct Metal Master. With Direct Metal Mastering, the groove is cut directly in copper metal. High-frequency loss, distortion and pre-echo associated with conventional lacquer mastering are eliminated and transient response is greatly improved. DMM record pressing sound brighter, cleaner, more detailed, with 15% more playing time than with lacquer technology. Stampers are plated directly from the DMM Copper Master, eliminating two of the three plating steps required for lacquers.

If there were a jazz version of ‘American Idol,” (dedicated to overall musicianship instead of just singing) one can easily imagine Concord Records’ latest crop of young artists--Christian Scott, Taylor Eigsti, and Erin Boheme--being the three finalists. And there isn’t a singer on that popular program with the self-assuredness, raw talent, and obvious affinity for music more sophisticated than the normal fare among those in her age group (she’s 19) that Erin Boheme displays here. There are plenty of singers who have been recording much longer and who are much older who have not developed the sensitivity that she demonstrates on her debut, What Love Is.

Boheme can also write, as the many original collaborations on this disc attest. The opening track, “Someone to Love” is a lovely slice of pop balladry that will make comfortable listeners who approach jazz-tinged music with some degree of anxiety. Labelmate Taylor Eigsti appears on piano, as he frequently does throughout What Love Is. Trumpeter Christian Scott is also heard on several tracks, including the playful “One Night With Frank.” Boheme cleverly works in quotes both lyric and melodic from a variety of well-known Sinatra songs. It could easily have become corny, and on some level it still is, slightly, but Boheme so effortlessly strikes the right balance between doe-eyed hero worship and flirtation that it works very well. “Let’s Make the Most of a Beautiful Thing” features a lush but subdued Corey Allen string arrangement and tasteful piano support by David Foster.

The title track has a real rainy night, West Coast vibe, with Scott’s trumpet providing a trace of Chet Baker melancholy. It’s not only a really nice song, but Boheme’s vocals are wonderfully mature. She does ok with “Teach Me Tonight,” but it’s not one of the stronger performances on this disc. For the most part, Boheme is best singing her own songs. Her version of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” strips the song of its blues underpinnings, weakening it considerably. On the other hand, her performance of her own “Make You Happy” and “Anything,” the latter with Joe LaBarbera on drums, is nothing short of perfection.

Boheme does connect with a pair of cover songs that feature Tom Scott blowing some inspired tenor sax. “Let’s Do It” is sultry and full of tension in all the right places, while her cover of Peggy Lee’s “I Love Being Here With You” is a great match of song and singer. Boheme offers an amalgam of Lee, Anita O’Day, with maybe just a whiff of Blossom Dearie, and the results are tasty indeed.

When someone shows promise as a singer, that is one thing. When someone shows promise as a singer and a songwriter, that is another. Based on the evidence on What Love Is, Erin Boheme is going to be around for awhile, and should be interesting to watch in the future. In the meantime, this is a great CD that should have something for both longtime jazz listeners and those who are more familiar with the finalists on American Idol than they are with great jazz vocalists of the past fifty years or so.
